Construction offensive for Vienna’s water supply: starting signal for new drinking water transport pipeline in the west of the city

An article from www.ots.at states that a new transport pipeline for drinking water will be built in the west of Vienna in the next few years. This pipeline, also known as the "5th main pipeline", will be built in three construction phases. The first construction phase will start on July 1, 2024 and will run from the 16th district (Mildeplatz) to the 17th district (side lane of Richthausenstrasse). The total length of the new transport pipeline will be 5.2 kilometers and, once completed, will run from Mildeplatz (16th district) to Sieveringer Strasse (19th district). The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

This new drinking water transport pipeline will increase the security of supply in the areas to the north and west of the city of Vienna. The city's increasing water demand in the coming decades will require additional transport pipelines in order to be able to distribute large quantities of water to the growing urban area. The expansion of the drinking water infrastructure is therefore crucial to ensure that the water supply remains at a high level in the long term, as Climate Councillor Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasizes.

In addition to the "5th main line", two further drinking water transport lines are currently under construction, which are referred to as the "3rd and 4th main lines". These measures are part of the strategic planning "Vienna Water 2050", which prepares Vienna's water supply for future needs. Vienna Water boss Paul Hellmeier emphasizes that the expansion of the pipe network is an important part of this construction offensive in order to ensure the water supply despite population growth.

Some details about the "5th main line" project are also known. The construction period extends from the beginning of July 2024 to the end of 2026. The pipe dimension is DN 800 (diameter 80 cm) and the material is ductile iron. The main goal of the project is to increase the security of supply and to provide for possible urban expansions in the north and west of the city. The construction phases cover the area from Mildeplatz to Richthausenstrasse (side lane), from Richthausenstrasse to Schöffelgasse and from Schöffelgasse to Sieveringer Strasse.

Construction costs of around 12 million euros have been estimated for the first construction phase, which begins on July 1, 2024 and is expected to last until May 2025. Further information on the "Vienna Water 2050" strategy is available on the website wien.gv.at/wienwasser.
