Discover Vienna’s garbage collection before 1946: Historical insights sought!

MA 48 is looking for historical information on garbage collection and street cleaning in Vienna before 1946. Historians Peter Payer and Jutta Fuchshuber are working on a project that deals with city cleaning in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the limited documentation, they are asking the people of Vienna for support. The project focuses on the changes in the areas of garbage collection, street cleaning, vehicle fleets and public toilets.

Josef Thon, amateur historian and head of the 48ers, is calling on anyone interested in history to provide old photos, documents or records for the project. Anything small, including personal records from the Nazi era, is considered helpful. The historians are particularly interested in information on places of work such as landfills and employment references. Anyone interested can contact Birgit Jeitler from MA 48.

MA 48 is responsible for waste management, street cleaning and vehicle fleet in Vienna. With around 3,000 employees, it is one of the largest municipal departments in the city. In addition to garbage and waste collection, MA 48 operates biogas plants and a landfill. Its tasks also include the WasteWatcher, the towing group and public toilet facilities. Vienna's waste management is considered a pioneer in Europe and makes an important contribution to climate protection and the circular economy.

An article from www.ots.at shows that MA 48 is asking the people of Vienna for historical information on garbage collection before 1946. The website also reports on the diverse tasks of the 48ers in relation to waste management and city cleaning in Vienna.
