In a lively debate in the National Council, the Freedom Party member of the National Council, Werner Herbert, emphasized the importance of the "COVID penalty repayment referendum" signed by over 100,000 Austrians. He clearly criticized the Corona policy of the previous governing parties and called for an honest review of the measures taken, which many have perceived as a restriction of their fundamental rights and freedoms.
Herbert emphasized that the referendum calls for the comprehensive repayment of illegally imposed fines, such as for not wearing FFP2 masks or not observing social distancing rules. He also emphasized the role of the police, who merely implemented existing laws and were instrumentalized by the government. Many police officers still have negative memories of that time and deserve recognition for their work.
In contrast to the federal government, Herbert emphasized the measures taken by the FPÖ in Lower Austria, especially the COVID aid fund, as an example of sincere reparation and the building of trust between citizens and politicians. The FPÖ in Lower Austria under Udo Landbauer and Christoph Luisser had shown what an objective, transparent and comprehensible policy in the interests of the population could look like.
According to Herbert, the positive results of the COVID aid fund, with 7,000 applications submitted and 5,000 audits approved by April, clearly showed that the FPÖ in Lower Austria is effectively acting for the people. He concluded his statement with an appeal to the federal government to step down in favor of an FPÖ-led government and thus enable a policy that acts in the interests of the Austrians.
