The current XXVII legislative period will thus use up the entire five-year period, which has only been the case in four legislative periods in the Second Republic so far. The election date was approved unanimously by the MPs and is based exactly five years after the previous election. July 9, 2024 was set as the deadline, with certain deadlines relating to it afterwards, such as the appointment of the election officers, the constitution of the electoral authorities or the submission of election proposals. In order to be able to stand for election, all candidates must have turned 18 by the day of the election. However, people aged 16 and over are allowed to vote, provided they have acquired Austrian citizenship by election day. 6.3 million people are expected to be eligible to vote in the upcoming National Council election.
The current legislative period, which lasts five years since the extension of legislative periods in 2007, will use up the full duration. In the past, most periods have ended prematurely, so this is only the second time that this has happened. The premature termination of a period was often done for strategic reasons in order to be able to schedule the election on a specific date. According to the Federal Constitution, the new National Council must be convened no later than 30 days after the election. The shortest legislative period in the Second Republic lasted only 434 days and ended with the XIXth period in 1996.
The newly elected National Council is expected to meet on October 24, 2024. Until then, plenary sessions and committees can continue to take place in the current composition. The convening of the constituent session is done by resolution of the Federal President on the basis of a decision of the Federal Government.
