Creation of a right-wing group in the EU Parliament announced
The creation of a new right-wing group in the European Parliament was announced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, Austrian FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl and former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis. The alliance, which was presented at a joint press conference in Vienna, is to call itself "Patriots for Europe" and will become one of the largest right-wing forces within the EU.
Goals and ideology of the new faction
The newly planned group, said Orbán, will focus on defending national sovereignty against the EU, fighting illegal migration and rejecting the climate measures of the "Green Deal". Kickl stressed the historic importance of this moment for European politics and described the alliance as a launch vehicle to achieve its goals. Babis emphasized that the creation of the new group will usher in a new era in European politics.
Parties and vote distribution
In the EU elections, the right-wing populist Fidesz, the liberal-populist Ano and the far-right FPÖ received the most votes in their respective countries. Fidesz has eleven representatives in the European Parliament, followed by Ano with seven and the FPÖ with six. In total, these parties have 24 representatives in the 705-member EU body. In order to form a new group, at least representatives from four other EU countries are required, with the AfD being considered as a possible coalition partner.
