Refugees in federal institutions: Compulsory work starting tomorrow – pocket money cut if they refuse!

Compulsory work for refugees in Austria

A new regulation will come into force tomorrow that regulates the work of refugees in federal care facilities. Refugees are now also obliged to do community service for the federal government, states and municipalities. This work can be carried out in various units and organizations, including care facilities, libraries, volunteer fire departments, civil servants' associations, nursing services, homeless shelters and soon even in winter service.

Refugees who refuse to do community service will have their pocket money reduced from 40 to 20 euros. The regulation has been received positively and it is expected that refugees will accept more work opportunities. This also offers benefits in the form of more job offers and getting to know the local population outside of the care facilities.

There are currently 430 people accommodated in the Traiskirchen initial reception centre, which represents a significant decrease compared to previous times. This decrease is due to a general decrease in asylum applications, particularly in Burgenland. The relief of basic services has led to the temporary closure of some quarters.

Another measure that has been well received is the mandatory basic rules courses for asylum seekers. These courses have been widely accepted and are being positively received by refugees. Refugees are also offered curricula to inform them about Austrian values and society.

A further step is the expansion of the benefits in kind card, to which the first pocket money will be transferred this week in state welfare facilities in Steyr, Upper Austria. This measure is intended to contribute to the further integration and support of refugees.
