U-Committee revelations: Billionaires, ministries and abuse of power – the parties’ records in comparison

The two parliamentary committees of inquiry into the Covid-19 Financing Agency (Cofag) and the "red-blue abuse of power" are nearing their conclusion, exactly 100 days before the National Council elections. The records of the five parliamentary parties are very different.

ÖVP: "Kickl system unmasked"

The ÖVP mainly focused on the investigative committee it had initiated into the "red-blue abuse of power", which, according to parliamentary group leader Andreas Hanger, had "unmasked the Kickl system". The party mainly criticised the FPÖ's abuse of power in various areas. The Cofag investigative committee, which dealt with possible preferential treatment of businesspeople close to them, received less attention.

SPÖ: Demands for improvements

The SPÖ, on the other hand, focused on the Cofag investigative committee and criticized the preferential treatment of billionaires. They proposed improvements in insolvency and tax law and called for politicians to treat wealthy entrepreneurs more fairly. In the investigative committee on the "red-blue abuse of power" they described the investigation as a diversionary tactic.

FPÖ: Criticism of ÖVP and Cofag

The FPÖ accused the ÖVP of knowingly supporting billionaires like René Benko through Cofag. They criticized the lack of transparency and the failure of the financing agency and called for a separate Corona investigation committee. In the red-blue abuse of power investigation committee, they blamed the ÖVP for abuse of power.

Greens: Focus on Signa bankruptcy

The Greens mainly addressed the Signa bankruptcy and criticized the actions of entrepreneur René Benko. They called for measures to prevent asset outflows and better control of companies. The Greens also criticized the ÖVP's hesitation in implementing legal consequences.

Neos: Criticism of Cofag and demands for reform

The Neos criticized the lack of transparency of Cofag and revealed the ÖVP's influence in the financial administration. They called for a reform of the investigative committee system and proposed harsher penalties for refusing to testify. The party also demanded a more thorough investigation into Russian infiltration of Austria.
