Ukrainian drone attacks: Moscow refinery and power plants hit

In an unexpected move, Ukraine attacked several targets in Russia, including a refinery in Moscow and two power plants. The Russian government announced that Ukrainian drones struck the Kapotnya refinery in Moscow as well as the two power plants. Despite the attacks, firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire at the refinery under control.

Ukrainian forces have repeatedly targeted energy supplies and oil refineries in Russia in the past, and carried out a surprise attack in Russia's Kursk Oblast in August. On the other hand, Russian forces have made progress on the Eastern Front in recent months, particularly in Donetsk, Ukraine.

According to reports so far, no one was injured in the drone attack. However, Russia rarely discloses details about the extent of damage caused by Ukrainian attacks. Moscow Mayor Sobyanin revealed that nine drones were intercepted and destroyed in Moscow and the surrounding area. The Kashira power plant and the Konakovo power plant in Tver Oblast were also targeted in the attacks, but there were no fires or casualties.

Following the Russian air strikes on Ukrainian cities, President Volodymyr Zelensky reiterated his call for the West to authorize attacks in the Russian hinterland. He stressed the importance of attacks on Russian military airfields in order to stop the air strikes. Ukraine is currently holding talks with the US and even a list of potential targets on Russian territory has been submitted.

Zelensky stressed that it is important to clear Ukrainian airspace of Russian guided bombs in order to force Russia to negotiate an end to the war. Six people were recently killed in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv and 99 others were injured. Western allies have so far refused permission to use heavy weapons against Russian targets. Therefore, Ukraine is using its own combat drones, although their explosive power is limited.
