The European Parliament will vote on the designated EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday. Although her confirmation is uncertain, the new Commission College is slowly taking shape. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has already resigned to become Commission Vice-President, while other states have also put forward candidates.
Italy's representative in the EU Commission
The decision on who will represent Italy in the EU Commission remains unclear. European Affairs Minister Raffaele Fitto and Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, both members of the Fratelli d'Italia, have the best chances. This decision could lead to a restructuring of the government. The head of government will decide on this nomination, with Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani stressing that Italy should receive an important portfolio and perhaps even the Vice-Presidency of the Commission.
Austria and its nomination
Austria has also not yet agreed on a commissioner. The governing coalition between the turquoise and the Greens is divided over the nomination. The ÖVP supports Finance Minister Magnus Brunner as a candidate, while the Greens, with the support of opposition parties, propose the former European parliamentarian Othmar Karas.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming days and what decisions will be taken to complete the EU Commission.
