AFD dominates the European elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Analysis of the coastal regions

The European elections 2024 brought a clear result in the state Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on the Baltic Sea. The AfD emerged as the clear winner of the election, receiving 28.3 percent of the vote nationwide. This shows strong dissatisfaction with the current government and a clear signal for change.

In the Coastal regions On the Baltic Sea, including in the metropolises of Rostock and Schwerin, the AfD is the strongest force. A similar picture is reflected on the popular holiday islands of Rügen and Usedom. In districts such as Vorpommern-Rügen and -Greifswald, the AfD received over 30 percent of the vote, which indicates clear support for the party in these areas.

The difference between East and West is particularly evident in this election. While the Greens emerged as the strongest force in Hamburg despite losses, they did not even receive 5 percent of the vote in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The current Prime Minister Schwesig of the SPD described the result in her state as a "strong lesson". The Social Democrats received only 10.3 percent of the vote and are faced with the challenge of regaining lost trust.

The election results show a clear change in the political landscape on the Baltic Sea since the 2019 European elections. Parties like the Greens are called upon to regain the lost trust of voters in order to counteract these developments. It remains to be seen how the political mood in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will develop and what impact the election will have on future political decisions.
