No mercy for separatist leaders Puigdemont
Barcelona (dpa) – In a significant step, the Spanish Justice dashing the hopes of Catalan separatists for amnesty, particularly those of prominent separatist leader Carles Puigdemont. The 61-year-old, who is in exile and hopes to be re-elected as head of Catalonia, will not be granted immunity from prosecution despite the government's request.
The Supreme Court judges argued that Puigdemont and other separatists misused public funds for the illegal 2017 independence referendum, highlighting their personal enrichment and violation of the EU's financial interests, which do not protect them from prosecution under the amnesty law.
The courts' decision is seen as a serious setback for the left-wing government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. If the ongoing negotiations on a government for Catalonia are unsuccessful, another new election is threatened. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming weeks.
Judge Ana Ferrer was the only one to disagree with the other judges, stressing that an amnesty would be the only reasonable interpretation of the amnesty law. The controversy surrounding the interpretation of the law casts a shadow over the political climate in Spain and efforts to find a solution to the conflict with Catalonia.
