Flood disaster: Regional resilience after three years
A flood disaster requires not only the reconstruction of buildings, but also strengthening community cohesion. Three years ago, a devastating flood hit North Rhine-Westphalia, killing 49 people. The traces of this event are still felt, but people are working to rebuild their region.
State aid for those affected
The state government of North Rhine-Westphalia has made significant funds available for reconstruction in recent years. A total of 4.1 billion euros have been approved, of which 818 million euros have gone directly to citizens. 82 percent of this amount has already been paid out, which shows that the financial support is reaching where it is needed.
Investment in the Infrastructure
In addition to direct aid for those affected, significant funds were also made available for the reconstruction of infrastructure. Hospitals, daycare centers and sports fields received a total of 2.7 billion euros in support. A large part of these funds have already been requested and paid out, which shows that reconstruction is in full swing.
It was also emphasized that 27 municipalities that were particularly affected by the Flood have received additional support of EUR 10 million. These funds are intended to compensate for financial disadvantages caused by increased staff costs. This will ensure that the municipalities that have been hit particularly hard also receive support.
The progress in reconstruction is a sign of the regional resilience and solidarity of the people of NRW. Although the grief over the losses is still present, the people are managing to revitalize their regions with Hope and build a better future together.
