Poverty in Germany: Politicians call for measures against child poverty
In Germany, the Risk of poverty of children is an alarming problem that needs to be addressed urgently. According to current statistics, one in seven children is at risk of poverty, especially if the parents have lower levels of education.
The figures from 2023 show that 36.8 percent of children with parents who only have a secondary school diploma or a high school diploma without a professional qualification are at risk of poverty in Germany. In contrast, the poverty risk rate for children of parents with higher educational qualifications such as a master's degree or a university degree is only 5.8 percent.
These worrying statistics show that education is a crucial factor in protecting children from poverty. Politicians are therefore calling for urgent action to combat child poverty, particularly by promoting educational opportunities for disadvantaged families.
To be considered not at risk of poverty, a person must have an income that is at least 60 percent of the median income of the total population. In 2023, this figure was 1,314 euros net per month for a single person, while it was 2,759 euros net per month for a family with two adults and two children under 14. These figures illustrate the financial burden that many families in Germany face.
It is time for the government to take concrete steps to reduce child poverty in Germany and to offer all children equal opportunities for a good future. Education should be at the heart of this in order to protect the next generations from the cycle of poverty and to create a fair society for all.
