Von der Leyen calls for boycott against Hungary Prime Minister Orban in sight
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has ordered a boycott in response to the unilateral steps taken by Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban in Ukraine policy. This step marks a clear departure from the previous cooperation between the EU Commission and Hungary.
Von der Leyen criticized Orban's unilateral actions as incompatible with the common goals and values of the European Union. The boycott includes the participation of commissioners in informal ministerial meetings held in Hungary under the leadership of the current EU Council Presidency. Instead, only high-ranking officials are sent.
In addition to this measure, the EU Commission has decided not to make the traditional inaugural visit to the Hungarian Presidency. A Commission spokesperson stressed that this step should be understood as a clear message to Hungary.
Ursula von der Leyen's decision signals strong resistance to Orban's unilateral actions and marks a turning point in relations between the EU Commission and Hungary. It underlines the importance of adhering to common EU standards and values for constructive cooperation within the European Union.
