Germany rejects Ukrainian demand to lift weapons restrictions

Olaf Scholz relies on smart foreign policy without escalation

After the NATO summit in Washington, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) made it clear that Germany will not support the unlimited use of weapons against Russia. This is explained with the aim of avoiding an escalation of the conflict and yet still supporting Ukraine as best as possible. Scholz stressed that a wise, clear and decisive foreign policy is necessary to maintain peace.

At the end of May, Ukraine was given permission to attack military positions on Russian territory in order to contain attacks on the city of Kharkiv. This measure was supported by Ukraine's most important allies, including Germany. Despite this, President Selenskyj called for the Repeal all restrictions in order to maximize the effectiveness of the defense measures. In particular, he wanted to prevent missile attacks from Russian military bases in the hinterland, such as those recently carried out on Kiev.

Scholz stressed that the existing guidelines and policies will remain in place, as they form the basis for an appropriate response to the conflict. It is important to ensure support for Ukraine, while at the same time avoiding a direct confrontation between Russia and NATO. This diplomatic balance requires foresight and determination to maintain stability in the region.
