The importance of humor in politics: Javier Mileis joke during the swearing-in of Federico Sturzenegger
In the midst of the hasty swearing-in of Federico Sturzenegger as the new minister for deregulation and state transformation, President Javier Miley humorously referred to a slip of the tongue by the government's general clerk, who made a mistake in the clock's hand during his certification speech. "We will deregulate the clock," joked Milei, obviously alluding to the new tasks that the current official will take on, but who has been advising the libertarian government since the drafting of Decree 70/23.
The ironic message was conveyed at the beginning of the ceremony, when the country's Chancellor, Martín Rodríguez Giesso, began to certify Sturzenegger's swearing-in act. At that point, however, the lawyer confused the time of 6:25 p.m. with 4:25 p.m. Nevertheless, the President's correction was not long in coming and came in the form of a joke.
After this incident, the President gave a short speech and praised the man who from now on will be responsible for 27 functions, including lowering taxes, deregulation and cutting government spending. "What a luxury I am allowing myself here!" said Milei before swearing in Sturzenegger and then joining him in an embrace.
The swearing-in ceremony lasted less than four minutes and did not include any official speech by the Head of State or even the new Minister for Deregulation and State Transformation.
In the front row of the hall, Martín Menem, Guillermo Francos, Diana Mondino, Karina Milei, Luis Petri, Luis Caputo, Sandra Pettovello, Mario Russo, Mariano Cúneo Libarona, Javier Herrera Bravo, Lisandro Catalán, José Rolandi and Manuel Adorni applauded, confirmed LA NACION at the government headquarters.
Also present were Minister of Security Patricia Bullrich, former adviser to Mauricio Macri Alejandro Rozitchner, former vice president of the Central Bank Lucas Llach, MPs Lilia Lemoine and Eduardo “Lule” Menem, as well as other officials.
According to LA NACION, Sturzenegger's first steps will be to introduce the so-called "Law of Leaves", which will repeal around 100 laws considered obsolete. He will also implement a series of decrees in the aeronautical field.
"He has everything ready to implement what he has been working on for the past two years," a source with access to the presidential office told this media, where it is assumed that the official's first steps are ready to be implemented.
Sturzenegger is behind the mega-decree 70/2023, which the government presented in December last year, just days after taking office, and which implemented a series of deregulation measures, some of which were caught by the judiciary, such as the labor law section, which was stopped after a lawsuit by the CGT.
The new minister will be responsible for 27 functions, which are detailed in the Federal Gazette and his appointment. The new appointment falls under the office of Guillermo Franco's Chief of Cabinet.
Among the minister's outstanding tasks, he will have to take care of more efficient public queues and examine which taxes can be reduced. At the same time, he will be responsible for organizing staff arrivals and departures, a sensitive issue for this government due to the cuts, and also design the salary system and absences of state employees, among other initiatives.
