Survey shows majority sees deterioration after Merkel's era
The retreat by Angela Merkel from German politics has led to increasing dissatisfaction among citizens, according to a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov. Of a total of 2030 respondents, 61 percent are of the opinion that the situation in Germany have worsened since Merkel's departure. A quarter of those surveyed believe that the situation has remained more or less the same.
Those who perceive a deterioration largely attribute this to the work of the current traffic light coalition. 28 percent see the "bad government" of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) as the main reason, while 15 percent blame external factors. For more than half of those surveyed, both aspects play a role in assessing the current situation.
On Wednesday, Angela Merkel celebrates her 70th birthday. After 16 years in the Chancellery, she leaves behind a divided opinion regarding her political legacy.
The survey was conducted online from June 28 to July 3 and took into account political quotas such as age, gender, religion, voting behavior, educational level and political interest of the participants. The sample represents the voting population aged 18 and over.
