politics: No area in the Ukraine sure – Schwesig contradicts Dobrindt’s proposal
In the current political discourse, a proposal by the CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt is causing controversial discussions. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig spoke up and vigorously rejected the proposal. Dobrindt had suggested sending war refugees back to certain areas of Ukraine if they do not accept work in Germany.
Schwesig stressed, however, that there are currently no safe areas in Ukraine. This is because Russia is attacking the entire country. The SPD politician stressed that Dobrindt's statement was "very populist" and was being made at the expense of many refugees, including women with children.
As President of the Bundesrat, Schwesig had already assured Ukraine of the solidarity of all 16 federal states. In her view, it is important to encourage the population to follow events in Ukraine closely. Russia is attacking the country and Ukraine must defend itself and protect its population.
It is important to note that the Federal Foreign Office has stated that there are no safe areas for returnees in Ukraine. War refugees from Ukraine have been able to receive basic social security benefits since June 2022 - instead of the lower benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act.
