Russia has again violated NATO airspace, this time in FinlandThe incident occurred on Monday morning (June 10), when a Russian military aircraft entered the airspace up to 2.5 kilometers for about two minutes. Finland has launched an investigation to look into the incident. This latest violation is the latest in a series of incidents in which Russian aircraft have endangered NATO airspace.
Since Russia's attack on Ukraine in February 2022, the situation between Russia and Finland has continued to escalate. The Ukraine war was the main reason why Finland joined NATO in April 2023. As a result, the alliance's eastern border has been extended by 1,340 kilometers, leading to increasing tensions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has also announced plans to redraw Russia's maritime border with Finland. This would declare areas such as the Gulf of Finland and regions in Kaliningrad as Russian internal waters. This move is seen by Finland as a provocation and has further fuelled tensions.
The situation is further complicated by the fact that other NATO countries such as Poland and Romania have also reported similar violations of their airspace by Russian activities. In December 2023, Russian drones entered Romania's airspace, which led to an alert launch of Romanian and German fighter jets. It was also reported that a Russian cruise missile had entered Polish airspace.
NATO is on high alert in light of these incidents and has stressed that its fighter jets are on standby 24 hours a day to respond to suspicious flights near its airspace. While it says violations of NATO airspace by Russian military aircraft are rare and short-lived, the situation between Russia and NATO countries remains tense.
It was originally developed from a buoy in the 1950s! Since then, it has been an integral part of every garden party and the centerpiece of every social gathering outdoors.
