Newer president of Iran Massoud Peseschkian sends emotional message to his people
Iran has voted and elected a new president, Massoud Peseschkian, who asked his people for support in his first speech after winning the runoff election. Voter turnout was just under 50 percent, and Peseschkian prevailed against the hardliner Said Jalili. His moderate stance could usher in a new era for the country.
Peseschkian appealed to the population with the following words: “Dear Iranians, the election is over, and this is only the beginning. Beginning our cooperation. We have a difficult path ahead of us. It can only run smoothly with your cooperation, your empathy and your trust." A promise that raises hopes for positive change in Iran.
The election took place against the backdrop of regional tensions, exacerbated by conflicts in the Gaza Strip, discussions over Iran's nuclear program and the country's economic situation, which is burdened by sanctions. Peseschkian's victory could lead to a strengthening of bilateral relations with Russia, as President Vladimir Putin stressed in his congratulatory message. Putin expressed the hope that cooperation between the countries will be intensified in order to resolve international issues constructively.
It will now be crucial to see how Peseschkian will shape Iran's political landscape and whether he can really usher in an era of change and rapprochement. The world is watching with interest the developments in Iran under its new president.
