New government in South Africa: Ramaphosa distributes ministerial posts and forms coalition

South Africa’s government reshuffle: challenges and opportunities for the new coalition

The recent announcement by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa about the composition of his new cabinet has caused political waves in the country. In a historic decision, the head of state awarded 12 Ministerial posts to opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), which now holds six ministerial posts. A clear sign of a Government of national unity (GNU) is intended to put the country on a new political course.

However, the African National Congress (ANC) retains the lion's share of ministries, including key portfolios such as foreign affairs, defence, energy and finance. With a total of 32 ministers, the cabinet is now two seats larger than before. This expansion reflects the diversity of the 11 parties that make up the new governing coalition.

The new government faces major challenges, including economic growth, social justice, and the fight against poverty, unemployment and corruption. The stability and effectiveness of the coalition-based government model is being questioned by political analysts. Despite the uncertainties, the coalition alliance also offers opportunities for democratic renewal in the country.

South Africa's role as an economic power on the African continent makes political developments in the country internationally relevant. As a member of the G20 and due to its raw material reserves for the energy transition, South Africa's political agenda is also being closely followed by Germany and Europe.
