Berlin (dpa) – The partial legalization of cannabis brings new regulations for motorist in Germany. The Bundestag recently passed a law that sets a THC limit on Tax similar to the alcohol limit of 0.5 per mille.
New Regulate
Stricter rules have been adopted for novice drivers and mixed consumption of cannabis and alcohol. In addition, tighter limits on the joint cultivation of cannabis in clubs are planned, which are to be implemented from July.
Since April 1, the consumption of cannabis for adults has been permitted, including private cultivation. To complement these regulations, measures have been introduced for road traffic, which experts have been discussing for some time.
The THC limit
The legal limit is 3.5 nanograms of THC in the blood. Exceeding this limit can result in a fine of 500 euros and a one-month driving ban.
Mixed consumption
A new administrative offence has been established if alcohol is added to cannabis consumption. Violations can be punished with a fine of 1,000 euros.
Further measures and tests
THC consumption of any kind, whether through joints, food, drinks, oils or extracts, is affected. Saliva tests should be used as initial detection, supplemented by a blood test if there are signs of unsafe driving.
Effects of cannabis
Cannabis affects the ability to drive, with effects occurring 20 to 30 minutes after consumption and wearing off after three to four hours. With regular consumption, THC can be detectable in the body for longer.
Reactions and discussions
The discussions about the new rules show different views. A CDU politician described it as a threat to road safety, while a Green MP stressed that the consumption of cannabis and driving must remain strictly separate.
Cannabis cultivation associations
Changes to the cannabis law also affect associations in order to prevent the cultivation of large plantations. Controls are to be handled more flexibly and additional requirements are to be placed on commercial providers.
