Schleswig-Holstein plans complete switch to DAB+ by 2031

Digitalisation of radio: Schleswig-Holstein relies on DAB+

The state government of Schleswig-Holstein has presented a clear timetable for the gradual phase-out of analogue FM radio. In close cooperation with private and public radio stations, it was decided that the digital format DAB+ would be completely switched to by 2031. This step marks a significant change in the radio landscape of the state.

As a first step, several private radio stations will stop broadcasting via ultra-short wave next year. This will be accompanied by a continuous improvement in DAB+ coverage. Then Norddeutscher Rundfunk and Deutschlandradio will take the digital step in order to continue to provide listeners with the best possible music and information. This decision reflects the trend of radio stations increasingly moving towards digital technologies.

The Switching to DAB+ not only offers improved sound quality, but also brings ecological and economic benefits. The lower power consumption of digital radio reduces the environmental impact. Schrödter, the head of the Schleswig-Holstein State Chancellery, emphasized the sustainability of this step and the need to end the parallel transmission of FM and DAB+.

It is estimated that around 140 million radios across Germany would no longer function if FM radio were phased out. This development shows that the digitization of radio is inevitable and presents new challenges for everyone involved. Schleswig-Holstein's clear roadmap makes it clear that the future radio landscape in the state will be digital.

The official announcement of the exit from FM radio was broadcast on Deutschlandfunk on June 28, 2024 and marks a milestone in the history of radio in Schleswig-Holstein.
