German government reaffirms moderate stance in Ukraine crisis
At the NATO summit in Washington, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) reiterated his clear opposition to the unrestricted use of Western weapons against Russia. This position runs counter to the demands of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selensky, who called for the regulations to be relaxed.
Scholz stressed the importance of the existing guidelines and policies regarding the conflict in Ukraine. He stressed that it is in the interest of all parties to avoid escalation and to demonstrate wisdom and firmness in the negotiations. The focus is on protecting Ukraine, but this should not lead to an open conflict between Russia and NATO.
The German government is therefore continuing to pursue a moderate and cautious approach to the Ukraine crisis in order to promote a sustainable and peaceful solution. Scholz stressed that the security and stability of the region are the top priority, but without entering into a direct confrontation with Russia.
