Vice-Chairman of the Union parliamentary group Jens Spahn (CDU): Trump and the search for commonalities
Jens Spahn, the vice-chairman of the Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag, advocates emphasizing what unites us when dealing with US presidential candidate Donald Trump. Despite critical points in Trump's rhetoric, Spahn emphasizes that there are also similarities that should be taken into account.
Spahn spoke about this issue during his stay as an observer at the Republican Party Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He admits that Trump's choice of words and his direct manner often irritate him. Trump's handling of the storming of the Capitol in particular causes Spahn problems.
Nevertheless, Spahn stresses that there are important issues on which he sees agreement with Trump. For example, he criticizes Germany's long-standing energy dependence on Russia, although he sees Trump's criticism as justified. Spahn also agrees with Trump's call for an increase in defense spending in Germany, as the current budget planning shows deficits in this area.
Regarding China, Spahn stresses the need to pursue common strategic goals to contain Chinese expansion. Despite different interests, both sides should look for opportunities to work together.
Spahn thus appeals to the importance of searching for common interests in political debate and emphasizes the opportunity for cooperation, even with controversial political figures such as Donald Trump.
